BioTech Nation Interviews & Podcast
Pitching "BioTech Nation"
THE “BIOTECH NATION” AUDIENCE
BioTech Nation (BTN) is both a podcast stream relevant to the global biotechnology industry, and for qualified interviews, it is also aired in the Mainstream media as a regular segment of the one-hour weekly public radio program, Tech Nation with Dr. Moira Gunn. From home station KQED in San Francisco, Tech Nation is broadcast via NPR Affiliate stations throughout the US, on American Forces Radio and Television International (AFRTS) to 177 countries, and in other radio broadcast venues. BTN PODCASTS WHICH ARE HEARD BY MAINSTREAM AUDIENCES
BioTech Nation interviews which are within the Tech Nation program are podcast on two separate podcast streams – one as a part of the weekly Tech Nation podcast, and then through the regular BioTech Nation podcast stream.
BTN PODCASTS SOLELY RELEVANT TO BIOTECH INDUSTRY AUDIENCES
BioTech Nation interviews which are solely “inside-biotech” industry topics are generally only be present on the BTN podcast stream. The BTN podcast stream is found via direct podcast feed on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, Alexa, Audible, Podcast Addict, Pandora, and other popular podcast distributors.
BIOTECH NATION PODCAST AUDIENCE REACH
In terms of audience reach, 79% of BTN podcasts are downloaded to the US, however, they reach a significant worldwide audience. This is led by the major global bioclusters of UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, Japan, China, Australia and Canada, among others. GUEST SELECTION CRITERIA
For those guests who seek to air on BOTH Tech Nation and BioTech Nation, both the guest (and their story) generally meet the following criteria:
- Good human interest appeal- Story relevant to many people, or be of national or global interest- Guest has established biotech + science credentials to talk about the story; in general, spokespeople do not qualify.
Book authors may meet these criteria if there is broad audience interest. For those guests who seek solely to appear in the BioTech Nation ONLY podcast stream, both the guest (and their story) generally meet the following criteria: - General Biotech Industry appeal, focusing on the entrepreneurship journey from lab bench or engineering bay to registered product - Story made relevant to a good percentage of biotech industry professionals SUCCESSFUL PITCHES
- Identify both the proposed guest and the proposed story- Provide a very short, topic-relevant bio of the guest.- Enable traceable credentials – such as on LinkedIn. IT TAKES A LITTLE MORE EFFORT TO BUILD A BIOTECH NATION INTERVIEW …
A signature of all BioTech Nation interviews is that they are comprehensible to anyone. Even biotech professionals within the industry are often primarily familiar with the specific area in which they work. Our goal with all BioTech Nation interviews is that they are comprehensible to listeners with specific expertise as well as those with little knowledge regarding the topic at hand.
THE PRE-INTERVIEW [SOMETIMES]
Short pre-interviews may be conducted with either public relations representatives or the guest themselves to ascertain suitability. These may occur in-person at conferences or via Zoom. With long-standing relationships communications who have successfully placed guests on BioTech Nation, this step can often be eliminated.
THE ZOOM “STORY CALL”
Once the guest and the story has been identified as having a good chance of success, a Zoom “story call” is scheduled to go through the story in detail, identifying words or concepts that may have to be worked on, statistics that may need to be confirmed, etc. On average, these take 45+ minutes, and sometimes, when the subject has not been discussed on air previously, a second story call is scheduled. Once all issues are resolved and challenges overcome, a remote recording session is schedule.
REMOTE RECORDING SESSION
Prior to the remote recording session, the guest will need to meet the tech requirements, which is an external microphone and any kind of earphones, so that the guest’s microphone only hears the guest’s voice. (Guests who do not have this set-up, can easily acquire a cardioid (or unidirectional) microphone at low cost via Anazon.)
The BioTech Nation production team will send a link to the remote digital recording studio.
Dr. Gunn will have prepared a set of questions, reflecting the arc of the story, and in the first part of the session, will review the sequence of these questions with the guest, so that the story unfolds seamlessly. Then, once the recording is underway, the interview is conducted, although there may be some retakes, as necessary.
Public Relations representatives and internal Communications personnel may attend both the story call and the remote recording session, and are, in fact, encouraged to do so. Following recording, the technical post-production starts, and the interview is ultimately edited and marked for inclusion in a Tech Nation broadcast and/or the BTN podcast stream.
